Nourishing Bone Broth Gravy

Ingredient substitutions

  • Bone broth instead of drippings because it's a wholesome and nourishing alternative.
  • Unsweetened almond milk instead of cow milk because it's dairy-free.
  • Tapioca flour instead of white flour because it's gluten-free.

Why I created this

When I created my mashed plantains recipe, I wanted a gravy that would perfectly complement it. I didn't want to use a gravy recipe that directed me to use leftover pan drippings.

Because why eat a healthy mashed plantain dish only to top it with a gravy made of remnant grease and fat?? I wanted a more wholesome gravy to go with it. And sometimes, you just don't have a pan of drippings laying around readily available at your behest.

Another reason for creating this recipe was to make a gravy that could accommodate people with different dietary restrictions. In my family, I have members who try to avoid dairy and gluten, including myself.

And so I made sure that there would be no dairy milk, refined flour, and cornstarch in this recipe.

Recipe rundown

First, bring the bone broth to a boil on medium high heat.

While the bone broth is heating up, mix/whisk the almond milk and tapioca flour in a separate bowl. It's importantly to really mix them well in order to prevent the gravy from being "clumpy".

Once the bone broth is at a boil, pour the almond milk-tapioca flour mixture in with the bone broth.

Mix, and then add celery salt and black pepper to your taste.

Keep whisking the gravy until it thickens to your liking. And that's it!

Food pairing ideas

This Bone Bone Broth Gravy goes amazing with my Mashed Plantains recipe!

The gravy will also pair well with casseroles, or meat dishes (for those who aren't vegetarian/vegan).

Helpful tips

  • If you're using store-bought bone broth, it may already contain salt. So taste the gravy before adding more.
  • Make sure to thoroughly and completely whisk the almond milk and tapioca flour before adding to the bone broth in order to avoid lumpy gravy.
  • To make thicker: continue whisking the gravy as it boils until it gets thicker.
  • To make thinner: add either more almond milk or bone broth, and whisk to make sure it's fully incorporated.
